Support LPC Financially
Your support both in prayer and financially is needed!
Lagniappe Presbyterian Church is going through a dramatic transition. We have hired Carey Hammett as our new senior pastor, and we are seeking a new facility for worship. This is occurring at a time when our area of the Gulf Coast continues to rebuild from Katrina, strives to recover from the national economic downturn and is now suffering from the physical and emotional consequences of the oil spill.
Our congregation is severely limited in its ability to provide financial support. Some are making payments on mortgages for houses that no longer exist; others have lost their jobs because of the BP oil spill or because of company closures.
The mission of Lagniappe, from its inception in January 2006 as a church plant, has been to participate in the restoration of creation on the Mississippi Gulf Coast by declaring and demonstrating the love of God as shown in Christ Jesus.
For more than five years we have declared the Gospel and demonstrated it by focusing on community relief and reconstruction. We are now participating in the restoration by continuing to declare the Gospel and by actively ministering to our community's rehabilitation and development needs. We have not changed our mission. We have moved to the next phase--addressing spiritual and physical needs that existed even before Katrina.
Lagniappe currently has two primary outreach ministries.
The first is our discipleship ministry designed to prepare the men and women of Lagniappe for the challenges of gospel proclamation in a "post-christian" context. Pastor Hammett is currently preaching a series on the book of James. The focus of this series is authenticity and reality in the individual Christian walk. In line with this series, pastor Hammett endeavors to spend as much time as possible building the community and personal relationships within the membership of Lagniappe Church. Small group Bible studies and fellowship meals factor into this process.
Our second outreach ministry involves community development. We desire to bring the love of Christ to bear in every nook and cranny of our community, with a particular focus on the root causes of poverty. Our first phase deals with childhood development. We are currently partnering with the Bay-Waveland school district on a tutoring/mentoring program with the local elementary school called "Tiger Time." Tutors are matched with one student for an entire school year and meet on a weekly basis with that student during school hours. Here we have the opportunity to partner with our local schools to provide students with one on one academic and emotional support. Click here for more info on "Tiger Time."
There are many more opportunities to actively participate in addressing the needs of the community, including Jobs for Life training and Individual Development Account (IDA) programs, but in the midst of our transition and shortage of funds, we are limiting our community outreach to existing endeavors.
Our transition, mentioned above, means several things. We are currently looking for a new worship and office facility. The facility we currently use does not suit our needs as we are limited to Sunday evening worship services only.
While the unknowns are great, our God is also great and ever faithful. He is on His throne sovereign over our individual lives, over LPC, and over our community. He owns all the money, all the buildings, all the resources, and yes even all the pastors in the world. Thus we can pray boldly and confidently to our God whom we know will provide to meet our needs.
